Struggling to get a job

About You:

Earned a doctorate in Mathematics a Masters in Computer Science, after 8.5 years of campus life in USA. Highly ethical, enterprising, providing and caring type of personality. After graduation, blessed with a good job with lot of possiblity to grow at an elite institution in Berkeley, CA. At the end of the first year, my term was not renewed due to un-fair reasons and my job was given (actually, taken) to a very less qualified but an established employee. After more than one year of greiving and doing community service at Hindu Temple, I started to apply to IT jobs in BayArea, only to find myself very in a tight job market. Day by day I get more desperate and also get more discouraged by unanswered job applications and failing job interviews (more than 2 years of gap in work is the main reason sighted by the interviewers.) Now I am not sure how to go about and have volunteered to work for free in a promissing software development project at UCB.
