Software Engineer-in-Training seeks Mentor.

About You:

I am a distance education student (MS - Software Engineering) of Southern Methodist University of Dallas TX, and a Canadian engineer. How should I go about seeking a mentor in software architecture and management? Although my studies are dominated by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) framework, I spend most of my efforts harnessing/developing web API's and have delved in the Open Source - especially UNIX, Java/XML client-servers. So far I haven't had much success finding a mentor particularly because my Profs are in Texas, while I am living in Vancouver British Columbia. My uncle who is an electrical engineer and the CEO of his company suggested I go work for SUN and seek an appropriate mentor from within the company. My aunt who was listening suggested I finish my degree first before making applications. I see the value of both perspectives, but am in a Catch-22. Which comes first? So I decided to ask a professional for some advice. Do you think I could find a Software Engineering mentor who could mentor a Web Services project?

Looking for:

The Association of Professional Engineers (CANADA) has an engineer-in-training program which is a four-year program leading to professional licensing. This program requires the engineer-in-training to produce a log book of relevant work that is signed off by a mentor. I would like to participate in this program, and any engineer could act as mentor, but it would be a great bonus to find a mentor who is a Software Engineer familiar with the Sofware Engineering Institute (SEI) framework. I am seeking a mentor to supervise projects developing Web Service API's.
