One more year—I have waited my entire life for this moment. It is like anticipating for your entre, but the moment it arrives, you ask yourself, what happens now? As I sit here anticipating the next step in my life, a tiny voice in my head repeatedly asks me, Are you smart enough for college? Are you valuable enough for scholarships? These questions flood my conscious each day. I have experienced a number of hardships that I would not even wish upon my worst enemy. I want to convey who I am as a person and who I can be in any community. Going to college has always a dream of mine. I envisioned myself being a college student, but while growing up in West Philadelphia, I never had little guidance and was unclear of the steps I needed to take to meet my goals. I grew up without a father figure, so I always regarded my mother highly. My wish is for others to understand that my experiences served as essential milestones in my development. I am Kori White not because of what I underwent but in spite of them. I am stronger, wiser, and free. I look forward to being part of a diverse community for my dreams and me.
