Transition from the field to office
About You:
I’ve been a Service Manager for an OEM machinery manufacturer for five years, transitioning from a 16-year background as a Field Foreman in construction. Moving from a field environment to an office setting has been challenging, particularly in developing effective communication skills for meetings and presentations. To improve, I joined Toastmasters to build my public speaking and presentation abilities. Recently, I accepted a new role at a different manufacturer, but due to significant layoffs, I am now the only person in my department. Instead of managing a team, I find myself handling daily calls, order entry, and other tasks better suited for support staff. This shift has left me feeling frustrated and a bit stuck in my career.
Looking for:
Communication and Office Dynamics – Since transitioning from a field role to an office environment has been a challenge, a mentor who excels at communication, especially in corporate settings, could provide insight into navigating office culture and conveying your ideas effectively. They could help you develop a communication style suited to your goals in management and leadership. Emotional Intelligence and Stress Management – Since feeling frustrated and stuck is impacting your outlook, a mentor who demonstrates emotional intelligence and effective stress management techniques can provide tools for resilience. They could share strategies for balancing immediate pressures with long-term focus, which may alleviate feelings of resentment and reinvigorate your motivation.
