Transitioning from the Audio Engineering field to Digital/Print media. Looking to start my own magazine and avoid major pitfalls.

Looking for:

Looking for general guidance in starting my own magazine. Mainly in the area of subscriptions and how to offset costs while building up readership. I'm unsure how major companies are able to offer $12yr subscriptions. Is it volume printing discounts, or paid for through advertising revenue?? I'll be primarily digital and printed subscription based. No interest on being on newsstands.
